Why Choose the Surgical Weight Loss Center at MountainView?
According to the Surgical Review Corporation, 23 million Americans are morbidly obese. With cases of obesity on the rise, the Surgical Weight Loss Center at MountainView strives to help those in need of a solution to this life threatening disease.
Center of Excellence Losing excess weight can increase a patient’s chances at a longer, healthier life, improve mobility and give an individual more energy to carry out activities of daily living. With such advancements in the field of bariatric surgery, patients can enjoy a better quality of life and eliminate many health conditions associated with obesity. MountainView Hospital has been performing bariatric surgery since 2002 and has completed more than 500 successful cases.

Procedures
There are three procedures we offer patients at the Surgical Weight Loss Center:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGBP)

This procedure is performed laparoscopically, allowing the surgeon to create a small stomach pouch which restricts food intake resulting in feelings of satiety (sense of fullness) following even small meals.

As gastric bypass implies, food is rerouted past most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. Weight loss is achieved through both gastric restriction and malabsorption.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB)

The LAP-BAND® System is an adjustable silicon band that is inserted laparoscopically and placed (like a belt) around the upper part of the stomach. An access port allows the surgeon to adjust the inner surface by adding or removing saline. This creates a new, smaller upper stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below. This new upper pouch can only hold a small amount of food, so patients will feel full sooner.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)

The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure in which two-thirds of the stomach is removed, which provides for quicker satiety and decreased appetite. The remaining stomach looks like a long tube, hence the name sleeve, which restricts food intake by allowing only a small amount of food to be consumed at one time.

Weight loss is achieved by both a reduction in stomach capacity and the production of the hormone ghrelin, which is associated with hunger and appetite. This procedure is also performed laparoscopically. This procedure works by restricting food intake without involving bypass of the intestinal track or a foreign object being place around the stomach.

MountainView Hospital has been named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. MountainView’s COE distinction signifies the hospital’s participation in a rigorous survey and evaluation process to assess the level of care provided to patients. Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, this award demonstrates our Surgical Weight Loss Center’s optimal performance for bariatric patients.
